Originated in ancient China, Feng Shui is a system of aesthetics that is believed to use the laws of Heaven (astronomy) and Earth (geography) to help improve one’s life by receiving positive ch’i or qi. Feng Shui literally means “wind-water” in English, which is cultural shorthand derived from a passage of Zhangshu (Book of Burial) by Guo Pu of the of the Jin Dynasty that reads: “Qi rides the wind and scatters, but is retained when encountering water.”

Today, Feng Shui is not only used by the Chinese but also by the Westerners. However, because of the number of years that had passed and because Feng Shui had become somewhat an industry in the US and was reinvented by New Age Entrepreneurs for Western consumption after Richard Nixon’s visit to the People’s Republic of China in 1972, much of the knowledge has been lost in translation or misinterpreted that it gained improper attention, was misused and even disrespected. Feng Shui, originally used to help maintain the balance of qi (life force or energy) and as guide in the orientation of a structure to be in harmony with its surrounding environment, has now become an aspect of interior decorating in the Western world.

Because of this misconception about Feng Shui, it has now become one of the modern-day scams tend to deceive people into buying arrays of metaphysical products such as charms and crystals. Alleged masters of Feng Shui also tend to offer their services in exchange to a hefty sum of money to rearrange someone’s home.
